Science Key Stage 5 | Rainhill High School

Science Key Stage 5

We offer 4 different courses at KS5; A Level qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as a L3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science. The latter is a partially coursework and partially externally examined qualification, whereas the A Level qualifications are assessed with summative exams at the end of Y13.

"I don't have a feeling of inferiority. Never had. I'm as good as anybody, but no better.” Katherine Johnson

Pupils completing both Combined Science and Separate Sciences at GCSE acquire the knowledge and skills to progress to KS5 Science. The variety of qualifications available mean that all pupils can continue their scientific studies if they wish.

All of these qualifications include a significant practical component, and are knowledge rich – further developing the knowledge, themes and understanding built in KS4. There is a much greater need for independent study, revision and consolidation, as whilst pupils are guided and directed, they are increasingly responsible for their own reflection and progress.

Our vision is to develop knowledgeable, skilful and responsible scientists who are passionate about wherever their studies take them next
